St. John’s Hymn:   "In This Church"

Words:   Members of the Church;     Music:   Rev. Dr. Rayner W. Hesse, Jr.

Verse 1: (SOLO)

No one should remember

a time they were not invited

In this church we welcome ev’ry one all

In this church there’s a feeling

that we’re somehow reunited to one another And the world

when we simply recall

How from once empty pews we began,

In open lives came a new,

Our disillusions to heal,

And we saw what could happen

When each one takes their place

In one all you are welcoming meal:

Chorus:   (Choir)

Should you say

we’re “the little church on the hill,”

May we be known

as a mountain of peace,

May we be seen as a garden

Where God’s gracious love

Is discovered and shared without cease,

Yes we may be just a small church

by the mill,

But what we preach

behind century old doors,

We’ll take forth to share

with whom e’re will receive us

Showing how love in communion restores.

Verse 2:   (SOLO)

No one should remember

A time they were not encouraged

In this church we wish courage to all,

In this church there’s compassion

For diverse ways of believing

And acceptance, no thought to forestall;

Consider the ways the creative spirit

Lives in us, each time we reach out to our guests,

And we know what can happen

When we proclaim peace here at last,

Having come through our trials and our tests;

Chorus:   (Choir )

Bridge :   (Choir)

The little church on the hill

It remains here and still,

It calls neighbors and friends to our pews.

But beyond whom we know

We extend all our hands,

To those cast out

We sing the good news:

Chorus (Choir)
