Text of poemHave I ever told you
that I loved you
from the moment
I saw the crown
of your little baby head?
We don’t share memories
in our family anymore.
(But, then, did we ever?)
This is how it was.
You were born on a Monday,
brought home on a Saturday.
—liquid bullets of rain
sprayed the sidewalk
all day.
The welcoming party
of few
Sat in a borrowed car
listening to the drear,
the father
isolated in an envelope
of illness and fear,
the others
waiting for something
to mend them again.
The back door opened
and you were handed in,
protected solicitously
from your too-new world.
Arms argued over
who would get you first.
When it was my turn
I buried my nose in your milky smell
and kissed your downy head.
It was the first time
I’d ever known
“love at first sight.”
The car ferried them home
in the onslaught of rain,
the father cast adrift
and heading to the whirlpool
that would soon
pull him down.
And though his legacy
to this baby
would be scant
—little joy
—unspoken words
—unshared events
He folded this baby
into his heart to take with him
on the journey he still faced
—this son
whose birth he’d overshadowed
—this child whose portrait
was his mirror.
Have I ever told you
that I loved youfrom the moment
I saw the crown
of your little baby head?
